ISO-14001
In the North American paperboard industry, Strathcona was the first 100% recycled clay coated paperboard mill in North America to be ISO-14001 certified.
ISO-14001
ISO-14001 is the most significant environmental standard in the world, created by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), Technical Committee SCI ISO/TC 207. It specifies a set of environmental management requirements for the creation and implementation of an Environmental Management System (EMS). The standards encourage a cleaner, safer and healthier world for all of us.
ISO-14001:2004 Paperboard Industry Certification
Certified January 18, 2001, Strathcona is committed to:
- pollution prevention: water, waste and emissions
- compliance with all laws and regulations
- protection of aquatic life in the Napanee River
- continuous improvement of its EMS
What Strathcona ISO-14001 Certification Means for Our Daily Lives
Ecosystems are by definition, fragile. Minimizing the environmental impact of the Strathcona mill, located on the bank of the Napanee River is a top priority. Achievements include:
- 85% of the water used in manufacturing is recycled. Water returned to the Napanee River is thoroughly cleansed and cooled, and independent studies prove that the returned effluent makes a positive contribution to the river’s aquatic ecosystem.
- Since 2004, CO2 emissions have been reduced by 14%, and the carbon footprint gets smaller every year.
- The mills’ waste is converted to an organic soil conditioner used by local farmers as compost. It offers several benefits: adds organic matter to improve clay soils; provides a rich carbon source for soil microorganism, provides crop nutrients, and improves the soil structure and its water holding capacity.
